Wild Makeover Tip: FebruarySpring clean your garden. With welcome signs of spring appearing, clear dead and fallen leaves from around emerging new growth. Put up bird boxes and complete hedge pruning before nesting season. Cut up removed stems and branches to mulch around shrubs, suppressing weeds, retaining moisture and sheltering insects. Spring clean bird feeders, especially bird tables and baths, which can spread disease.
Note the main bird nesting season is March-August inclusive, when RSPB recommend avoiding hedge and tree cutting. However, some birds start sooner, especially with climate change bringing milder weather, so always check carefully before pruning in February and September too, as it is illegal to disturb nesting birds. https://www.rspb.org.uk/helping-nature/what-you-can-do/activities/grow-a-hedge
